'BNP has become a party full of jokes'

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said BNP is complaining against the 11th general election to cover their “miserable” defeat.

He said this while visiting a project site at Kawla, near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“BNP has become a party full of jokes and now they are complaining to cover their defeat,” Quader said.

Quader said the ruling Awami League and the government are not paying any heed to BNP’s demand of a judicial investigation on the election.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said: “Parts of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Airport-Moghbazar) will be opened after the second phase of the public–private partnership (PPP) project finishes.

“The first phase of the PPP project from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the Banani railway station will be completed by June this year. The second phase (from Banani-Moghbazar rail crossing) of the construction work is expected to be finished in July next year.”

He said: “In the third phase, the expressway will connect Moghbazar railway crossing to Kutubkhali on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and it will be finished by September 2021.”

“So far, 50% work of the first phase has been completed, while the overall progress of the project is 20%,” Quader added.

The 20km Dhaka Elevated Expressway has a budget of Tk8,940.18 crores. It will start from Shahjalal International Airport and end at Kutubkhali on Dhaka-Chittagong highway via Kuril-Banani-Mohakhali-Tejgaon-Magbazar-Kamalapur-Sayedabad-Jatrabari.

PPP Project Director AHM Shakhawat Akhtar, Sakasith Swanagar, manager of Italian Thai Development Public Company Limited, and other officials were present during the project visit.
