Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered a report within a couple of days about the Mohammadpur clash between two factions of Awami League that killed two teenagers, says the ruling party’s general secretary.

“The prime minister wanted a report about the Mohammadpur clash within two days …those responsible for the incident will definitely be punished,”Obaidul Quader told a press briefing at the Awami League president’s political office on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, two teenage boys – Arif, 14, and Sujon,18,-- were killed whena pick-up van ran them over during a clash between two factions of the Awami League-one led by Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok and the other by Awami League Dhaka city north unit General Secretary Sadek Khan in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.

Quader said the Awami League is ready to tackle any kind of subversive activities.

“Only the Election Commission is responsible for deferring the election schedule and Awami League has nothing to do with it,” he said replying to a query.

Quader hoped that all political parties will participate in the election.

Around 3,200 aspirants have collected nomination papers in the first two days since Friday, said Quader.  Of them, 500 have submitted the forms.

This year, the Awami League has increased the price of nomination papers from Tk25,000 to Tk30,000.

Mashrafe-Shakib to buy nomination forms on Sunday

Skippers of Bangladesh ODI and Test team, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan are all set to collect nomination forms from the Awami League to contest in the upcoming general election.

The famed cricketers will collect their nomination forms on Sunday, Awami League Office Secretary Biplab Barua told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

Mashrafe and Shakib will collect nomination papers to contest the election from the Narail and Magura constituencies respectively, he said.

On May 29, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the two cricketers will contest the 11th general election.

However, a few days later, Obaidul Quader said Mashrafe and Shakib will not be involved in politics before the next World Cup Cricket, slated for May, 2019.

Mashrafe, fondly known as the “Narail Express” among fans, has been involved in social activities after retiring from the T20 format in April last year, according to media reports.

“No doubt that BNP will participate in the election”

The Awami League general secretary said he has no doubt that the BNP will take part in the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.

“I don’t know why the BNP is yet to start their nomination selection process. But I have no doubt that the BNP will participate in the next election,” said Quader.

Quader alleged that BNP’s reaction over election in the Rajshahi rally, organized by Jatiya Oikya Front, was a violation of electoral code and conduct.
