BNP leaders and activists have formed a human chain in Dhaka as part of its scheduled countrywide program protesting the conviction of the party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Amid tight security, several hundred BNP leaders and followers joined the proceedings around in front of Jatiya Press Club around 11am Wednesday, reports UNB.

The group chanted slogans demanding the immediate release of Khaleda Zia.

BNP senior leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, are scheduled to address the program.

Police cordoned off protesters to prevent any trouble.

Metropolitan and district units of the party around the country are also scheduled to observe the program at their convenient time and places.

On Monday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced a three-day countrywide program, including the human chain, to protest the conviction of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

As part of the program, the party will also observe a token hunger strike on Thursday in all metropolitan cities and district towns.

On Monday, a Dhaka court sentenced BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others to seven years' rigorous imprisonment each in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
