In a nearly eight-minute phone conversation leaked phone conversation, Mahi told Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Saturday: 'In the name of unity, an anti-state conspiracy is going on'

Bikalpahara Bangladesh (BDB) Joint Secretary General Mahi B Chowdhury is convinced that an anti-state conspiracy is behind the recently-formed Jatiya Oikya Front, led by eminent jurist and Gono Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain.

In a nearly eight-minute phone conversation leaked phone conversation, Mahi told Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Saturday: “In the name of unity, an anti-state conspiracy is going on.”

Multiple media outlets have confirmed the authenticity of the leaked conversation after speaking with both Mahi and Manna. The Dhaka Tribune, however, could not independently verify the authenticity of the tape.

The telephone call, made after both the Jatiya Oikya Front and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh (BDB) held separate press briefings on Saturday, has already gone viral on various social media platforms.

Here is the full transcript of the conversation-

Mahi: Manna bhai [brother]?

Manna: Yes brother.

Mahi: You went ahead and read out the announcement, even after speaking to my father?

Manna: Yes. No, no, no, I should have thought this through more thoroughly, because Rob bhai [Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President ASM Abdur Rob] spoke to sir [AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury]. Sir told us that he will think about this, and let us know within half an hour.

Mahi: No, no, no, I was beside my father when he spoke to Rob bhai, and if he said such a thing, it is untrue. However, my father spoke to you personally.

Manna: No, no, what do you mean he [B Chowdhury] spoke to me personally? We spoke, but we only talked about some pre-existing issues. Honestly speaking, there will be a lot of discussion about today’s events, but I will discuss the details with you in person, not on the phone.

I faced an unavoidable situation. I would have avoided it if Rob bhai had not spoken with sir, and if he did not give us that reply. After that we spoke among ourselves, and then I agreed to their decisions.

During that discussion, there was no mention of me reading out the announcement. That decision was taken at a later time. Initially I refused to do it.

Mahi: Earlier in the morning, Moinul Hossain picked up Kamal Hossain from his home. Moudud planned not to allow any discussion between B Chowdhury and Kamal Hossain.

Kamal Hossain was taken away, and B Chowdhury felt a bit insulted. It was all part of a conspiracy, and Manna bhai, you unwittingly became a part of it.

Manna: No, no, no, why would I become a part of it? I will stay out of it. Do not worry about it. However, I do want to understand your side of the story. Why are you blaming me, and accusing me of betrayal?

Mahi: No, no, no, I never mentioned the word [betrayal]. When my father spoke with you, you said you would not attend the press conference and the meeting. I trusted your word. But when you read out the announcement, my father was a bit shocked, because he fought for you against Kamal Hossain.

Manna: I understand that.

Mahi: We fought for you, and now you have become one of the closest people to Kamal Hossain. I was insulted by him, but you joined him.

Manna: What you said just now is totally right. Your father saved me when I was being pushed to a corner. I did not forget it. However, you people are not out of the Greater Unity effort, are you?

Mahi: Greater unity with whom? Unity with a person who does not know what common courtesy is?

Manna: These incidents are quite common in the political arena.

Mahi: Manna bhai, we do not engage in such politics. I firmly believe that you and Rob uncle have unknowingly become part of a conspiracy, and we were spared by the grace of the Almighty.

Manna: What do you mean you were spared from it? Are you leaving the unity?

Mahi: We did not leave, you people pushed us out. You people held a meeting but did not call us. You people made an announcement but we had absolutely no clue. Did you discuss it with B Chowdhury?

Please tell me. B Chowdhury went to visit Kamal Hossain, but he wasn’t home. He could not even make a phone call to apologize for it.

You people held a press conference, made a joint statement, but did you inform us?

We did not abandon the unity. The public knows who wanted unity, and who was against it.

Manna: Okay, if the unity wants you back, what would you do?

Mahi: The unity does not want us. You people have made it clear today.

Manna: We mentioned you and your father during the press conference. We mentioned that B Chowdhury might join us in a while.

Mahi: That was a lie. The public has been lied to and defrauded. My father was not supposed to participate in the press conference, because no one told him about it.

Manna: I had mentioned that due to an issue or perhaps an error he [B Chowdhury] could not be present here. However, we consider him a part of our alliance.

Mahi: Alliance with whom? You made an alliance with Kamal Hossain, but he has dreams of becoming the prime minister of Bangladesh. With his leadership, the alliance will make a secret deal with Jamaat. We want no part of this move.

Alhamdulillah, Allah does everything for the greater good. But my only question is: why did you not make your plans clear to the public right away?

They should have admitted that B Chowdhury was left out of the meeting on purpose, and the meeting was held in secret. Why did they not say these things?

Manna: No, no, there was no question and answer session at the press conference.

Mahi: You should have said that Kamal Hossain left his home to hold a secret meeting at his office without informing B Chowdhury. Kamal Hossain wanted to make an alliance without us and he wants a secret alliance with Jamaat.

Manna: Brother, why would you say such a thing?

Mahi: You should have admitted what you did.

Manna: I will admit that the events that took place were not done in good faith. But we wanted an alliance, so I cooperated. After listening to you, I would say that I was also a bit confused during the events.

Mahi: Manna bhai, I swear in the name of Allah, I am saying these things to you because I like you. Manna bhai, I know you are 100% sincere about the alliance.

But, an anti-state conspiracy is taking place using the name of this unity. They used you to read out the announcement and tried to include me in the process.

Remember this well, because I will not elaborate it further.

Manna: I will think about it and I want to talk to you in person.

Mahi: Agreed. I believe that you have become a victim of an ongoing conspiracy. I have a gut feeling that a conspiracy is taking place and they tried to rope us in. They made you read out the announcement.

This is not related to Jatiya Oikya. This is all a part of their scheme, their conspiracy.

Manna: I am not thinking the same way you are. However, I am quite heart-broken about the events that took place.

Mahi: Do you believe that the events that transpired are all coincidences? Do you really think that there are no foreign and domestic powers at play here?

Manna: I do not think the events are a coincidence, but I am also not thinking anything so outlandish.

Mahi: This is something big. Try to figure out who are the people responsible for these events, who prevented B Chowdhury from sitting with Kamal Hossain, how the press conference was held through a conspiracy and how you were used to make the announcement.

Please consider what you are getting into, I do not want to make any further comments about it.

Manna: We will talk about it in the future.

Mahi: Agreed, Inshallah.

Manna: Okay.
