Tangail unit of BNP has held a rally demanding that party Chairperson Khaleda Zia be released unconditionally from jail.

In the program, held in front of the party office on Saturday, the party men also protested against the recent arrest of district BNP General Secretary Farhad Iqbal, and demanded his immediate release.

Speaking at the rally, speakers claimed that the government had used state machinery such as the judiciary, to shift the trial of the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case against Khaleda inside the Old Dhaka Central Jail.

The BNP leaders also alleged that this government move is unconstitutional and that a camera trial is being organized.

District BNP Vice-President Ataur Rahman presided over the rally. BNP Joint-Secretary Abul Kashem, Organizing Secretary Shafikur Rahman and Publicity Secretary AKM Monirul Haque, among others, were present at the event.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Law Ministry issued a gazette notification, declaring that the proceedings of Zia Charitable Trust case would be held at Old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road for security reasons.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia remains imprisoned since February 8, after her conviction and sentencing in the Zia Orphanage trust graft case.
