The leaders of Juktofront and Gono Forum have decided to unite under the leadership of former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain with the goal to save the country together ahead of the 11th parliamentary election.

The decision came from a meeting held at Gono Forum President Kamal Hossain’s Bailey Road residence Tuesday night.

“We have decided to form a sub-committee to organize all kinds of programs of the alliance and will inform everyone about our future plans,” said Badruddoza, who also heads Juktofront and Bikalpodhara Bangladesh, after the meeting.

He also said that they would organize a program on September 22 where all the member parties of Juktofront will take part.

Earlier, a team of Juktofront leaders, led by Badruddoza, had arrived at Kamal Hossain’s house around 8pm. The meeting started five minutes later and ended around 9:50pm.

Among others, Nagorik Okaiya Convener Mahamudur Rahman Manna, Bikalpodhara Secretary General Maj (retd) Abdul Mannan, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rab were present.

After the meeting, Zafrullah told reporters that they wanted to participate in the upcoming election, but the polls-time government should be neutral and it should have a political identity.

He said: “We are not going to follow the incumbent government blindly.”

Sources from the meeting said that Juktofront also submitted a seven-point proposal to Kamal regarding several issues, including political, judiciary, democratic, national polls, freedom of expression and rights.

However, several leaders of the alliance told reporters that they did not discuss joining forces with BNP during the meeting.

No announcement regarding the alliance and Gono Forum participating in the upcoming national polls was also made.

On December 5 last year, Bikalpadhara, Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL), JSD and Nagorik Oikya had formed Juktofront, with Badruddoza Chowdhury as its chairman.

Kamal Hossain was reluctant to join the coalition at the beginning. But now he has decided to join their movement, without becoming a member of Juktofront, to establish national unity.

However, over the last few months, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has held talks with various political parties, including all member parties of Juktofront, as they are currently in the process of reorganizing alliances to be more competitive in the 11th general election.

BNP leaders recently also met Gono Forum chief Kamal regarding the new alliance, which will be formed with the aim of compelling the government to hold the polls under a neutral administration.
