The ruling Awami League chose its mayoral candidates for the upcoming Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Barisal city corporation elections at a meeting of the party’s Local Government Nomination Board on Friday evening.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka, in her capacity as AL president.

Following the meeting, she announced that Rajshahi city unit president Khairuzzaman Liton, Sylhet city unit president Badaruddin Kamran, and Barisal city unit’s joint secretary Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah - son of Abul Hasnat Abdullah - had been selected as mayoral candidates in their respective cities.

Earlier, Liton, Sadiq and Kamran collected Awami League nomination forms for contesting the three city corporation polls, which are all scheduled to be held on July 30.

In the most recent city polls held in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal in 2013, the Awami League mayoral candidates Liton, Kamran and Shawkat Hossain Hiron were defeated by Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Ahsan Habib Kamal.

The ruling party is taking the polls seriously as its leaders believe that winning the mayoral offices in the three cities will provide a welcome boost to the morale of its leaders and activists before the parliamentary election due in December.
