The ruling party’s general secretary on Thursday unveiled a plan to deploy an ensemble of celebrities and A-listers as candidates for the 11th parliamentary elections

The Awami League’s latest strategy to woo voters at the ballot box promises to be nothing short of a red carpet affair.

The ruling party’s general secretary on Thursday unveiled a plan to deploy an ensemble of celebrities and A-listers as candidates for the 11th parliamentary elections.

Roads, Highways and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the prime minister received a list of sportsmen, cultural, and media personalities who she was considering as possible nominees.

“There will definitely be some excitement with the candidate selection for the upcoming elections. The Awami League will select several celebrities: the list of possible celebrities is now in the prime minister’s hands,” Quader said on Thursday at a press conference at the Dhanmondi party office after a secretariat meeting of the central committee.

“We will nominate candidates from the sports, cinema, as well as media industries who can win.”

The AL general secretary said they had talked with cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, who however is not thinking about the polls, but about the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Quader said they were not sure about Mashrafee and Shakib’s possibilities of contesting the upcoming elections.

Earlier on May 29, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said cricketers Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafee bin Mortaza would contest the 11th national polls on an Awami League ticket. Mashrafee would run from a Narail constituency while Shakib could also contest the polls if he wanted to, he said.

Awami League president Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told journalists on Wednesday that celebrities take part in politics and run for office in many countries, but celebrity nominations for the coming polls would not deprive deserving party men.

Addressing the press conference on Thursday, Obaidul Quader also announced that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate a new 10-storey office on June 23, the founding anniversary of the Awami League.

He added the party would organise nationwide rallies to celebrate the launch of Bangabandhu Satellite-1, and the awarding of Sheikh Hasina with a DLitt and a Global Women’s Leadership award.

The party’s joint general secretary Mahabubul Alam Hanif, organising secretaries Mesbah Uddin Siraj, Ahammad Hossain, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, and Abu Syed Al Mahamud Swapan were present at the press conference.
