When contacted, both of them have declined to comment on the matter
Cricketers Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe bin Mortaza will contest in the 11th national polls, says Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
“Mashrafe will run in the next election from a Narail constituency,” Kamal told reporters after the weekly meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) at the NEC auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday.
“Shakib may also contest the elections if he wants. That, however, is his call. There is no problem to him contending,” he said in response to a query.
However, when contacted, Bangladesh’s Test and T20 skipper Shakib and ODI captain Mashrafe both declined to comment on the matter.
Shakib, who is from Magura, is currently with the Bangladesh national team in Dehradun, India, where the Tigers will be playing a three-match T20 international series against Afghanistan in the first week of June.
On the other hand, Mashrafe, who is from Narail and fondly known as the “Narail Express” among fans, has been involved in social activities after retiring from the T20 format in April last year, according to media reports.
The next parliamentary election is slated for December this year.
Planning Minister Kamal, however, did not clarify when asked from which party Mashrafe would seek nomination.
“Whichever party Mashrafe chooses to join the election, he is a good man. If you are a voter in his area, you will obviously vote for him,” the minister said.
