'They have nothing better to do than lying in press conferences and complaining to foreigners'
The Awami League general secretary has lambasted the BNP for its rejection of the Khilna City Corporation elections, saying the public will reject the party in the national elections.
“In the coming national elections, the people will reject those who rejected the Khulna city polls,” Obaidul Quader said at an event in Dhaka on Wednesday morning.
“They rejected the people’s vote and the people will reject them too,” he said.
He was attending a reception of meritorious students at the Monipur School and College in Mirpur.
Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister, said that the Khulna city polls were free and fair.
“It was a festive polls and Talukder Abdul Khaleque was elected mayor by people voting spontaneously and enthusiastically,” he said.
“Apart from a few incidents, the election was free and fair. Everyone is saying it was a good election. Only BNP is protesting,” the Awami League leader said.
“They have nothing better to do than lying to the press and complaining to foreigners,” he added.
He said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia getting bail from the Appellate Division was evidence that the judiciary was independent in Bangladesh.
“The courts punished her, courts sent her to jail and the courts gave her bail. We have nothing to say about this.
“But our stance against corruption will not change,” he said.
