Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said there will be voting in case of failure to reach a compromise to pick the new leaders for Bangladesh Chhatra League’s central committee in its upcoming council.
"There will be a meeting with everyone’s participation to reach a compromise. If there is no compromise, it will go to vote (to elect new Chhatra League leadership)," she said replying to a question at a press conference organized at Ganabhaban in Dhaka over her recent visits to Saudi Arabia, the UK and Australia.
The 29th council of Chhatra League, the student wing of Awami League, will be held between May 11 and 12.
Responding to a question, ruling party chief Hasina said the council would be held systematically and efforts were being made to reach a compromise.
The distribution of nomination forms among possible candidates was already underway, she said. "If no compromise is reached, the council will go for voting to pick the new Chhatra League leaders."
"We want appropriate leadership. We want true students who have not crossed the age limit, and the meritorious ones to join the leadership," she said, adding that if there was any mismatch in the vote, it would be unacceptable.
Hasina said if an understanding was reached, the new Chhatra League committee would be announced through a press release.
