Obaidul: No one but the people will dictate the upcoming elections

Update : 24 Apr 2018, 08:55 PM
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday no one other than the people of Bangladesh would determine who will be in power after the upcoming general elections slated for the end of the year. The minister made the comment when asked whether he discussed the BNP and Khaleda Zia with Indian political leaders during his visit to the country. “We did not discuss the BNP or Khaleda Zia. We know that India never interferes in the internal matters of other countries. We will have to make our own election plans” he said, at a short press briefing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his return from a three-day visit to India. “The purpose of this tour was only to develop a good relationship between Awami League and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The relationship between India and Bangladesh is very good, and this relationship will be boosted further if Awami League stays in power for a third consecutive term,” he added. Regarding the topics discussed on the tour, Obaidul said: “We primarily talked about the land boundary pact and further negotiated terms for the Teesta deal, which will be a mark of friendship between our countries as well as the exemplary leadership of our respective prime ministers. Moreover, a timely agreement for the Teesta deal will create a sense of goodwill among the people.” He also said the Awami League delegation praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the land boundary pact, which would not have been possible without his good relationship with Sheikh Hasina. The minister added that a more detailed press conference would be held within the next couple of days, where more information on the matters discussed would be revealed. Earlier, the Awami League delegation went to India on March 22, at the invitation of BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav. During the tour, Awami League met with the BJP general secretary and also attended a dinner hosted by the Bangladesh Embassy in India on Sunday. They met with Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and visited the Indian parliament on Monday morning, before attending a lunch hosted by BJP leader and Indian State Minister for External Affairs MJ Akbar in the afternoon. Later, the Awami League delegation met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They also held a bilateral meeting with BJP leaders in the evening. Awami League presidium member Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya, Joint General Secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, and Abdur Rahman, Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud, Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Md Misbah Uddin Siraj, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, and Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, and Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, were part of the 19-member delegation.
