There is no case against 60% of councillor candidates for Gazipur city corporation polls which voters think will help 'clean' candidates get a positive outcome in the election.
As many as 286 candidates are contesting for councillor posts in various wards. There is no case against 172 candidates.
According to affidavits, these candidates are from various political parties and there are some independent candidates.
An attempt to murder case is pending trial at a Gazipur court against Dewan Soleman, a councillor candidate of ward no 12.
“The case was filed against me deliberately,” said the candidate.
In his affidavit Mehedi Hasan Faruk, a councillor candidate of ward no 17, mentioned three cases against him. The cases were filed under Special Powers Act. One case is under investigation while the two others are pending trail.
“The cases were politically motivated. Voters know me well. I hope the cases will not be a barrier to gaining support from them,” Faruk said.
Nazmul Hasan, a voter of the ward, said they would prefer candidates who have clean images.
“Candidates who face cases lag behind others in terms of getting support from voters. However, most of the time voters remain unaware of cases against the candidates,” he said.
Emdadul Haque Masum, a lawyer at Gazipur court, said this is quite normal that there are cases against political figures. “One cannot be a bad person if there are cases against them.”
He said sometimes the cases against the candidates play a positive role in elections. “By cashing in on the cases, the candidates try to get sympathy from the voters,” said the lawyer.
