Five Jamaat candidates competing for the post of councillor in the Khulna City Corporation elections have a total of 61 court cases in their name, according to the affidavits in their names.
According to the affidavits, the highest number of cases, 22, is in the name of incumbent Ward 31 councillor and Jamaat leader Jahangir Hussain Helal, who is running for re-election. In contrast, Ward 1 Jamaat candidate Azizur Rahman Swapan has four cases filed in his name and Syed Golam Kibria of Ward 3 has been pinned with nine cases.
Ward 12 candidate Master Shafiqul Alam has 12 cases, and Monirul Islam Panna of Ward 19 has 14 cases lodged against him.
Returning Officer of the KCC election Md Younus Ali said: “As the candidates have submitted proofs of bail from the cases, their run in the election will not be affected. Their nominations have been validated as they were on bail from the various allegations against them."
