Mentioning that there is no election in the country these days, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday demanded that the polling system be reformed.
"Candidates are being elected uncontested or through false votes or election engineering," Ershad said at a program organised by Jatiya Party-led United National Alliance (Shammilito Jatiya Jote) at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong.
Ershad said “Looting banks, including the reserve heist of the Bangladesh Bank, are rare incidents in history.”
"The banking system in the country has collapsed as the government didn't take any legal steps," he said adding, "So, we've to save our country as people want a change."
Criticising the government's activities, the former military ruler said “They are looting banks in the name of development.”
Talking abouyt the Prime Minister’s promise about 10 taka per kg rice, the Jatiya Party chief said, "Now rice is sold at 60-70 taka. How will a rickshaw-puller who has 3-4 children feed his family?"
Ershad said, "No government could make development like I did in my tenure. So, the people of the country want to see me in power again. We do not want a one-party government. Jatiya Party wants to form government with the participation of all parties."
Ershad called upon people to get united and come forward to save the country.
Presided over by Islamic Front Chairman Allama MA Mannan, the programme was addressed, among others, by members of the front Jatiya Party Secretary Ruhul Amin Hawladar and Forest Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud.
