Awami League concerned as internal dispute deepens
Awami League is concerned over internal disputes across the country ahead of elections. Leaders of the ruling party believe that drives should be launched soon to mitigate the crisis. They also decided to take action against leaders who are involved in internal feuds. The central leaders came up with the decision at a presidium meeting held at the party chief’s political office in Dhanmondi on Friday. They have also decided to inform Prime Minister and party President Sheikh Hasina of the internal disputes and urge her to take effective measures during a meeting of the party’s highest policy making body - the central working committee - slated for Saturday evening. At Friday’s meeting, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said rebel candidates had wielded influence in the union parishad and municipality polls held on Thursday. These candidates won 7 out of 53 union parishads. Pro-Awami League candidates also lost the recently held Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) polls, due to internal strife, say the party leaders. Quader warned of dire consequences if the party does not take prompt measures to contain these activities, said sources at the meeting. The presidium members agreed with the general secretary. Awami League Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim said many rebel candidates contested in the local polls. Though they were expelled from the party they were welcomed back after securing victory. Such incidents have encouraged others. The issue of rebel candidates was discussed on many occasions but no stringent measures were taken against them. When they come out as winners in the election their expulsion orders are withdrawn and they are provided with posts in the party as rewards. The bar council polls will be held on May 12. The party’s general secretary asked everybody to work jointly to ensure victory in the election. This article was first published on banglatribune.com
