BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded a neutral government during national elections.
He said: “The PM has to resign before the polls. The parliament has to be broken up.”
He made the statement on Tuesday before an Independence Day rally.
Mirza Fakhrul said: “We want to participate in a truly free and fair election. We want to establish a government that is for the people of the country. We fought a war for the sake of democracy and freedom. The current government is trying to rob the nation of these rights. They are trying to establish one-party rule.
“We will work towards freeing out leader Khaleda Zia. Hundreds of people are locked up unjustly; we have to free them too.”
The rally started from the BNP Naya Paltan head office and ended near Malibagh, Shantinagar. BNP standing committee members Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, and vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, were present at the event among others.
