Although the BNP has made all-out preparations to hold a rally in the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday said they have not yet received permission for the program.
“Though we are ready to hold our rally, we’ve not yet been given a nod for it. We’re waiting for permission from the police authorities,” he said.
The BNP leader made the comment while speaking at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Rizvi said the Public Works Department has already informed them that it will have no objection to allowing the party to use the Suhrawardy Udyan for the rally if the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorizes it.
Earlier on March 12, the BNP announced it would hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday, having failed to get permission to hold the similar programme on that day.
On March 2, the BNP first announced it would hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on March 12 to demand the release of its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.
The DMP authorities, however, informed BNP on March 11 that they could not permit the party to hold its rally on security grounds.
