BNP will now hold its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on March 19 after police denied the party permission to stage the event as planned on Monday.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the new date at a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on Monday.
“We were not allowed to hold a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan today [Monday] without any reason,” he said.
“We are not announcing any program at the moment but we will hold a rally at the same venue on March 19. We hope the authorities will take a positive step on the matter.”
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the BNP was not allowed to hold its Monday’s scheduled rally because of security reasons.
Fakhrul said they wrote to the DMP and other related authorities seeking permission for a rally in front of the party office or at Suhrawardy Udyan on February 22.
But the authorities did not permit the rally that time on the pretext of the Ekushey Book Fair.
“They said there would be no problem holding the rally in March,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader also said they were given permission to hold a rally in Khulna on Saturday an hour before, although the venue was moved from Hafiz Park to in front of the party office.
