Awami League is planning a show of strength and a display of unity it has with the people of Bangladesh in a mass rally to be held on March 7.
Several central and district level leaders of the Awami League have confirmed the matter to the correspondent.
According to party sources, the Awami League also plans to bring the flavour of election at the rally, and organize a huge showdown on the streets of Dhaka to assert its stance over the issue of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recent conviction and imprisonment in a graft case.
The ruling party has decided to commemorate this day in a special way this year, to mark Unesco’s recognition of the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as part of the world’s documentary heritage.
Extravagant preparations are underway to make the day memorable.
Following the Unesco recognition of Bangabandhu’s March 7 speech, two rallies were held in Dhaka on November 18 and 25 last year.
Plans to make it big
According to sources, Awami League Dhaka city units and its associate organizations have already held several workers’ meeting in North and South parts of Dhaka on Friday.
Many preparations are also planned on Saturday (March 3). Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader have plans to distribute leaflets at the New Market and the Mirpur area of the capital.
Dhaka South city unit has also organized two workers’ meetings on Saturday, at 12pm in Islampur and at 3pm in Mugda. Dhaka North unit will also hold several workers’ meetings.
These workers’ meetings will be held until March 6. The same level of preparation is underway in districts around Dhaka.
Nomination seekers in Dhaka are also taking additional preparations to show off public support behind them during the March 7 rally.
On February 18, Obaidul Quader at a joint meeting said: “The March 7 rally this year would be the largest rally in history. We must put emphasis on this program, as we will not be able to hold such a huge rally before the next general polls.
“The rally will be attended by union and ward level leaders, and they will receive a guideline from our leader (Sheikh Hasina) for the next one year. This is why the event must be attended by leaders and activists of all levels.”
According to sources, key areas of the capital, including the rally venue Suhrawardy Udyan will be decorated with lights. Posters and banners for the March 7 rally have also become a common sight in Dhaka.
Digital banners are being installed on dividers and islands of important roads in the city. Letters, containing instructions from Obaidul Quader on how to observe the day have been sent to party offices in the capital and in the district and upazila level.
Organizing a memorable celebration
Speaking to the correspondent, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said: “Following the Unesco recognition, this will be the first commemoration of the event.
“Awami League leaders and activists, along with people from all corners of the society plan to mark this special day accordingly.”
Responding to a query, the senior Awami League leader said: “The March 7 rally is not connected with the campaign for the 11th general polls. However, as this is an election year, polls could be brought up at the program.”
Dhaka City Unit Awami League General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad said: “We want to organize a huge rally and we want people from all strata to attend it. Central Awami League has given us instructions to prepare accordingly.”
He added: “There is no correlation between the incarceration of Khaleda Zia and the plans to organize a huge March 7 rally. We would have organized the rally this way regardless of Khaleda’s current status.”
