The BNP will hold a public rally on March 12 at the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan demanding the release of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said.
The party has sought permission from authorities concerned, he said at a media conference at the BNP's Naya Paltan headquarters on Friday.
Previously, police foiled a black flag program in front of the party's headquarters on February 24. The program was held to protest against the denial of permission to hold a rally in the city on February 22.
Later, BNP started distributing leaflets across Bangladesh from March 1 demanding the release of Khaleda. Rizvi has claimed that police also obstructed their leaflet distribution on Thursday at different parts of the country.
The party then asked for permission to hold a protest rally on March 11 – the date was later shifted to March 12. “Letters to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner and the Public Works Department have been sent seeking permission for the rally,” Rizvi added.
The BNP has been observing various peaceful programs in protest against Khaleda’s jailing.
