Two Chhatra League units lock horns at Central Shaheed Minar
Two units of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, engaged in an internal clash at the Central Shaheed Minar on the Language Martyrs’ Day. According to witnesses, the scuffle originated as different organizations carrying the banners of Awami League, Chhatra League, and their associate organizations gathered in front of the Shaheed Minar altar. Our photographer, Mehedi Hasan confirmed that the scuffle occurred between groups carrying banners of Chhatra League units. Ten Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) students and members of the Rover Scout were injured while attempting to stop the fighting. Meanwhile, some members of the DU Chhatra League Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit clashed with members of Rampura Jubo League and Lalbagh Awami League when exiting the Shaheed Minar shortly afterwards. [caption id="attachment_248128" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Chhatra League Police later evicted the troublemakers from the premises| Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka Tribune[/caption] DU Chhatra League Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit President Fakir Rasel Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune that one of the members of his unit were sucked into the clash between Rampura Jubo League and Lalbagh Awami League, while others attempted to restrain him. Police officials deployed in the area brought the situation under control soon after the scuffle broke out, and evicted the troublemakers from the premises. Speaking to this correspondent, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr Akhtaruzzaman said: “Sometimes untoward incidents just happen. Those who were involved in the scuffle do not hold the spirit of the Language Martyrs’ Day in their hearts. “The situation was brought under control within minutes. This is just an isolated incident.
