PM Sheikh Hasina: Corrupt people must face trial
Trial of those involved in corruption, terrorism and militancy must be held as the government wants to build a peaceful environment in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Tuesday. “I just want to tell you one thing: those who indulges in corruption, terrorism and militancy will have to face trial,” she said while speaking at a reception accorded to her by the Italian unit of the Awami League at Parco Dei Principi Grand Hotel in Rome. The Bangladesh premier further said the government wanted to develop Bangladesh and change the fate of its people. “This will be possible only when we are able to check and eradicate corruption, militancy and nepotism,” she said. Recalling the illegal capture of power by BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, she said those who had grabbed power illegally cannot give anything to the nation. About the recent verdict against BNP chief Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others, she said the case was filed by Khaleda Zia’s favourite people Moeen Uddin, Fakhruddin and Iajuddin. “Awami League did not lodge the case.” The prime minister said BNP is questioning the justification of giving the punishment for only Tk2 crore, and some intellectuals are also supporting this argument. “That means a certain amount of money is allowed to be stolen, does it not? Are they trying to say that?” she questioned. “Being a former prime minister, Khaleda Zia whitened black money. Where did that money came from?” she said. Sheikh Hasina said whenever BNP comes to power it turns Bangladesh into a den of corruption.
