One person was killed and at least 20 others, including policemen, injured when two factions of Awami League clashed in Narayanganj during a program meant to thwart BNP supporters from carrying out subversive activities over the verdict in BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's corruption case on Thursday.
Police had to open fire and lob teargas shells to disperse the groups during the fighting that took place on the west side Kanchon Bridge in Rupganj upazila around 11am, said Narayanganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police Faruk Hossain
Several injured were later rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where one of them was declared dead upon arrival.
The deceased was identified as Awami League activist Sumon Mia, 30, Rupganj police station OC Ismail Hossain confirmed. Three others were admitted to DMCH in critical condition, he said.
Police said the clash ensued after Kanchon Municipality Jubo League President Rafiq and General Secretary Golam Rasul and their supporters took position on one side of the road near Kanchon Bridge, with supporters of Rupganj Awami League General Secretary and Upazila Chairman Shahjahan Bhuiyan on the other side.
Both groups were there for a showdown in a bid to prevent any possible violent activities by BNP leaders and activists over Khaleda Zia's verdict.
Police first took position in the middle of the road and warned the ruling party factions. But as the situation deteriorated, police baton charged both groups and then opened fire to disperse them.
Additional SP Faruk said police had fired 30 rounds of teargas shells, 70 rounds of shotgun blasts and around 500 rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
