Activists of the ruling Awami League and its affiliate organizations have occupied key points of Dhaka city to stop BNP supporters from demonstrating.
Several ruling party leaders have told the Dhaka Tribune that they will keep occupying the streets all through Thursday as their higher-ups told them to.
A Dhaka court will deliver its verdict on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and five others, including her son, in a corruption case involving the alleged embezzlement of Tk2.1 crore received in charity for an orphanage.
Hundreds of BNP supporters have been detained ahead of the verdict scheduled for Thursday. Security has been bolstered across Bangladesh fearing violent protests by Khaleda’s supporters.
Shah Alam Murad and Sadek Khan, general secretaries of Awami League’s Dhaka north and south units respectively, said the ruling party activists had gathered at every bus terminal, shopping malls and other key areas as per their direction.
“We will be on the road to save the people from the BNP’s anarchy,” said Rafiqul Islam Babla, general secretary of Awami League’s Dhanmondi unit.
