Obaidul Quader: ‘Don’t let BNP create anarchy after verdict’
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader had some tough words for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday, a day before the delivery of verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, in which Khaleda is one of the prime accused. Speaking at a press briefing in the Awami League president’s Dhanmondi office on Wednesday evening, he said: “Khaleda Zia and the BNP has not shown respect to the court; she has declared war against the court.” Obaidul further urged people who “believed in the spirit of the Liberation War and democracy “to resist BNP’s efforts at sabotaging the law and order situation in the country after Khaleda’s verdict. “Don’t let them create anarchy on the streets,” he added. At the press briefing, he alleged that the BNP had been trying to disrupt law and order by provoking their leaders and activists to create a state of anarchy from the very beginning of the trial. “If the BNP tries to create a state of unrest, the law enforcement agencies will stop them,” the minister said. He alleged that the BNP was trying to make political gains by holding the country hostage to an imminent threat of violence. “Khaleda Zia and the BNP always choose the path of politics of violence,” he added. “If the verdict goes in their [the BNP’s] favour, they will say the verdict is right, and if it goes against them, then they will say that justice has not been served,” the road transport and bridges minister said. “Awami League has no intention of rooting out BNP or Khaleda Zia from politics. Awami League does not do violent politics; we will never do that.”
