Khaleda: At worst, they could put me behind bars
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said the government will not be able to harm her party, leaders and activists, as erosion of popular support is eating away at its foundation. “At worst, they could put me behind bars. Numerous leaders, activists and well-wishers of BNP have already been imprisoned. Nevertheless, this government won’t be able to harm our party, leaders and activists, as the foundation is slipping away from beneath the government’s feet,” she added. Khaleda was addressing the inaugural session of the party’s national executive committee’s meeting at Hotel Le Meridien in Dhaka on Saturday. The former prime minister called the meeting to give fresh directives to her party men about their next course of action and future movements centering on the elections, as she is awaiting a verdict in a graft case that is scheduled to be delivered on February 8. Urging her party men to have patience, Khaleda said: "I actively participated in movements against the Ershad-led military regime. I had to lose my parents, son and siblings, as I am involved in BNP’s politics. Nevertheless, I did not quit the party.” In her speech, she also urged leaders and activists of her party to be courageous in registering their protest against any type of injustice and put up resistance against any injudicious move. “I would like to say I am always with you and will be with you wherever I stay. Let’s face any type of upcoming danger together…We’ll work together in our good days, too.” She instructed leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies and allies to carry out their protest programs in a peaceful and democratic manner. Khaleda promised to recognize the sacrifices and efforts of those who would remain with the party and sincerely work for it during its bad days. Parts of the article were taken from banglatribune.com
