The central office of BNP at Dhaka's Naya Paltan has been colorfully decorated. The staircase from ground floor to the 6th floor has been re-decorated, and walls have been coated with new paint.
Instructions have also been posted, warning people not to slap posters on office walls.
As a pleasant surprise, Zia Smriti Pathagar [Zia Memorial Library] has been fully renovated. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is set to inaugurate the library this January through online video conference.
Speaking to the correspondent, General Secretary of Zia Smriti Parishad, Jahir Dipti said: “We hope that the party chief will inaugurate the newly renovated library at the central office in person.”
Visiting the office on Friday, the correspondent had found that the central office premises have been cleaned up nicely and posters have been removed from the walls.
A board depicting the historic 19-point demand made by BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman can be seen beside the staircase on the ground floor.
Another board, depicting a call from Khaleda Zia for reading more books has been placed right beside the previous board.
The next floor has pictures of three generations of BNP leaders-- Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
The Zia memorial library can be found on the 6th floor. A glass board showing a short biography of Ziaur Rahman has been placed at the entrance of the library.
According to an insider, the library was built due to a personal interest of Khaleda Zia. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir supervised the project since the beginning.
Another source from the BNP Naya Paltan office said: “All posters have been removed from the walls, but large banners on the outside of the office are ruining the beauty of the office.
“The bathrooms on the 4th and 5th floors also needs to be cleaned up regularly, otherwise the office environment will be ruined again.”
The Zia Memorial Library
A BNP leader told the correspondent that Ziaur Rahman had introduced political training workshops and a book reading club for party leaders and activists, but these programmes do not exist anymore.
Addressing the issue, BNP chairperson's media wing member Shairul Kabir said: “BNP aims to uphold three fundamental ideologies of its founder Ziaur Rahman. These are national unity, BNP’s political views and justice for all.
“There is no alternative to studying, for thoroughly understanding these ideologies.”
According to an insider source, 1,800 books have already been placed in the library, and they cover subjects such as politics, sociology, economy, literature and biographies.
BNP Central Office

Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul said: “Reading is an integral part of politics, and a library is an essential medium for politicians. The renovated Zia Memorial Library will provide us with this facility.”
On Friday, the 5th founding anniversary of Zia Memorial Library was observed at the central office.
