Atiqul Islam, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has received the green signal to become a candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation by-polls from Awami League.
His name came up during a meeting of Awami League’s presidium members held at Ganabhaban earlier on Saturday.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also sought opinions from the party leaders about moving forward with Atiqul, which would indicate he is right now the front-runner to become AL’s candidate for the election.
Atiqul had met the prime minister last week. Meanwhile, posters in support of Atiqul becoming the mayor of the DNCC have started appearing across Dhaka.
While talking to the Bangla Tribune, Atiqul said he will complete the unfinished work of the former DNCC mayor Annisul Huq and introduce new ideas to build a modern city.
We have heard that you are becoming the candidate for Awami League in the DNCC elections?
Like you, I have also heard that from various sources. I am honoured to know that the prime minister has considered my name as a candidate for the elections.

What is your preparation for the DNCC by-polls?
I have already taken preparations for the elections. I hope to get everyone on my side. If I get the nomination, my first priority will be to complete Annisul Huq’s pending projects.
What is your plan for the future of the city?
My first priority is to complete Annisul Huq’s pending work. His soul will find peace only after I am able to implement his vision. Late Annisul Huq had identified a lot of problems of the city and had taken the work forward.

If I am elected as the mayor, then I will seek opinion from everyone for the modernization and beautification of the city.
So far you have only lead business organizations, how are you going to handle the pressure of the city corporation? Do you have any plans?
Like late Annisul Huq, I also belong to the business community. I will try to handle the pressure like he did. I seek blessings, cooperation and affection from everyone.
