The 6-hour nationwide hartal called by the left-leaning parties protesting a rise in power tariff is underway.
The Communist Party of Bangladesh, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, and Democratic Left Alliance of Bangladesh enforced the hartal around 6am.
Leaders of left-leaning parties have brought out a procession from Shahbag around 8 am and gathered near the Press Club area.

The leaders said in the gathering, expenditures of low-income and poor people will increase due to the power price hike. With the increase in electricity prices, the prices of essential commodities, including house rent, will be increased.
Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) leader Comrade Khaliduzzaman Ratan said: "Police have detained 10 leaders and activists from SPB's headquarters at 5:30 am in the morning."
"No car was being vandalized in the strike but still the police are arresting the activists across the country," he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, BNP extended its support for the hartal.
On November 23, the leftist parties announced the hartal after the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission said it planned to hike the price of electricity for retail consumers by 5.3%.
The new price will be effective from December.
