Quader: Govt is facing its biggest challenge ever

Update : 17 Sep 2017, 12:38 AM
Awami League general secretary and Roads, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader had described the ongoing Rohingya crisis as the biggest challenge his party has faced during its current tenure. He also termed the Rohingya influx as an unbearable burden for his party at a press briefing held at Awami League president’s office at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi on Saturday. Quader said: “Around 400,000 Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh following the recent military crackdown. It is quite unaffordable for Bangladesh to give them shelter and food,” the senior Awami League leader added. “Recently Bangladesh has faced devastating floods. One third of the country went under water and Bangladesh is facing food shortage due to these floods. After such calamities, Bangladesh cannot afford such a great number of Rohingya,” he added. The minister, however, expressed his optimism about the government’s capacity to solve the problem. “Prime Minister Sheikh will place a proposal on Rohingya crisis before UN general assembly and she had an emergency meeting with all the concerned persons in this regard.” A 19-member team of ruling Awami League will visit China from September 19 to September 27. During this visit, Awami League leaders will meet Chinese President and other top-ranked leaders and urge China to mount pressure on Myanmar to take back their citizens. The senior politician also urged all the political parties in the country to work together n a bid to solve the crisis for the sake of the country.
