Moudud: Quader’s meeting with CJ ‘onslaught’ on judiciary’s independence

Update : 19 Aug 2017, 12:41 AM
Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday criticised Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s meeting with the Chief Justice after the verdict on the 16th amendment as an ‘onslaught’ on the judiciary’s independence. He also said Law Commission Chairman ABM Khairul Haque should not only apologise to the nation but also to resign from the Commission, as he violated rules of his service by holding a press conference to criticise the Supreme Court verdict, reported UNB. Moudud made the comments at a discussion organised by Labour Party, a component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, at the Jatiya Press Club. "A top leader of the ruling party met the Chief Justice after the verdict. This is a dangerous incident for the nation. It's an onslaught on the independence of the judiciary. Social values and the dignity of the judiciary have been undermined by the meeting,” the BNP leader said. Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, also said he is certain that ruling party leaders who are making derogatory comments about the 16th amendment verdict did not go through the judgement. "It's an enlightened and progressive judgment, given unanimously by the seven judges of the Appellate Division to ensure the independence of the judiciary. The government and ruling party are now making all-out efforts to destroy it. They're even waging a movement against the verdict, which is unprecedented," he observed. Moudud further added that Awami League had exposed that it does not believe in the rule of law by opposing the Supreme Court's verdict annulling the 16th amendment, and claimed such political interference by government made it impossible for the judiciary to be independent under the Law Ministry. Moudud also alleged that the ruling party’s use of law enforcement agencies to suppress opposition has led anarchy and a loss of law and order.
