Sheikh Rehana, the youngest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been made the adviser of Tungipara upazila unit Awami League in Gopalganj.
The district unit AL Office Secretary Ilias Haque told Dhaka Tribune on Sunday that the unit of the ruling party announced its full-fledged 71-member committee on July 17.
Sheikh Rehana was named a member of the advisory council in the committee, he also said.
AL President Chowdhury Emdadul Haque and General Secretary Mahbub Ali Khan approved the new committee, Ilias added.
Sheikh Rehana’s elder sister Sheikh Hasina, now the prime minister of Bangladesh, has been heading the Awami League for around 36 years.
In 2007-08, while Sheikh Hasina was imprisoned under the emergency rule of Fakhruddin Ahmed’s caretaker government, Rehana organised the Awami League secretly on Hasina’s behalf.
Bangabandhu, the Founding Father of the Nation, and most members of his family were killed in the Aug 15, 1975, carnage. Hasina and Rehana were abroad during the massacre.
