After the meeting, regarding the discussion with President Hamid over the formation of new Election Commission (EC) the Gana Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain remarked: “Just how without an impartial referee a match cannot held, similarly without an impartial EC a free, fair and impartial election cannot be held.”
The 14-members delegation placed a nine-point proposal which includes the enactment of a law to bring a permanent solution regarding the reconstitution of the commission.
The party also proposed for five members of search committee for new election commissioner selection.
The meeting was held at the Darbar Hall at the president’s official residence. The Gana Forum delegation reached Bangabhaban around 4:00pm and the meeting began at 4:45pm.
Following the meeting, Dr Kamal Hossain expressed his contentment over the outcome of the meeting to the press and said: “Dialogue is important for democracy as well as for holding a fair election. We are pleased to meet the president and had a cordial discussion on the issue of the Election Commission’s reconstitution.”
President Abdul Hamid had initiated formal dialogue with the registered political parties regarding the reconstitution of the Election Commission, holding the first discussion with BNP on December 18 last year as the tenure of the current Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC will expire in February 2017.
