An 8-member BNP delegation led by Chairperson Khaleda Zia reached Bangabhaban at 4:30pm to meet the president.
Obaidul said: “They need to be realistic about this. From the government's side, we regard the honourable president as our guardian. He is very generous by nature. He will fulfil his responsibilities properly.”
Calling the president's previous experience of having dialogues with BNP “unsatisfactory”, he added: "When late President Zillur Rahman called them for having a dialogue, they went for the talk. However, they were not satisfied."
Obaidul expressed his thoughts at a Victory Day programme held by Awami Swechchhasebak League.
He added: “BNP has come to its senses. They have agreed to have a dialogue with the president. If they went to Ganabhaban prior to January 5 election, the political scenario of Bangladesh would be different today.”
He further added: “Whoever is in politics to go to power with that kind of a mentality will increasingly lose support. BNP does not know what they really want. Do they really want power?”
