Turnout in municipal polls 73.92%

High turnout has been reported in the yesterday's municipal elections with the presence of 73.92% of the voters.

Election Commission Secretary Sirajul Islam disclosed the turnout rate in the EC Secretariat office on Thursday and said they have so far received the results of 214 municipalities while the results of rest 20 remained pending.

Voting of 39 polling stations under 19 municipalities were suspended.

The ruling Awami League came out on top in the first ever partisan municipality polls held on Wednesday in 234 areas of the country with a sweeping victory over arch rival BNP.

According to unofficial results, AL-backed mayor candidates won in 178 municipalities. The independent candidates got 25 and BNP-blessed won in just 23. Main opposition parliament Jatiya Party bagged just one.
