Veteran academic professional Suraiya Ahsan (Jhorna) passed away at Queens General Hospital in New York, US on Friday. She was 80 years old.
Born on 21, 1938, in Diamond Harbour, Kolkata to district magistrate Emdad Ali and Sufiya Khatun, Suraiya spent her childhood in Kolkata, Rajshahi, Pabna an Dhaka. She did her schooling at St Francis Xaviers School and Holy Cross College, and her MA in English at Dhaka University.
She was a teacher at Holy Cross School, Udayan School (then English Preparatory School) and Eden College. Later on, she became an English teacher at Sunbeams School in 1977, where she worked as a teacher, and later an administrator, for more than 40 years, inspiring many generations of students. She was in service as director, administration until her passing.
Suraiya is fondly remembered by her family, including her sons physician Saiful Islam (Jami) and actor Jeetu Ahsan.
Her first janaza was held on Saturday at the Jamaica Muslim Center in New York, and her second janaza will be held on Tuesday, after Asr prayers, at Baitul Aman Mosque on Road 7 (lake side) in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
