The ruling party general secretary also said it is not the responsibility of the parliament to increase the number of seats of a political party, and that each party must acquire more seats by itself by means of garnering greater public support

Awami League General Secretary and Roads, Transports and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has questioned the credibility of the report produced by the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on the exercise of absolute power in the parliament.

The minister said report findings that point to a strengthening of absolute power in the parliament is not based on accurate and reliable information

Quader made the statement at the end of a meeting concerning roads and highways at Setu Bhaban on Thursday afternoon.

Although the number of opposition parties in parliament is small, the parties are getting enough time to participate in all parliamentary activities, she said.

The ruling party general secretary also said it is not the responsibility of the parliament to increase the number of seats of a political party, and that each party must acquire more seats by itself by means of garnering greater public support.

“A political party’s duty is to win the people’s blessing in order to get more seats in the parliament,” said Quader.

The recent study, carried out by anti-graft watchdog TIB, found that good democratic practices are absent in the parliamentary sessions, with the data showing that there is not really an active opposition party in the Bangladeshi political scene.

The study used both quantitative and qualitative methods for collecting data.
