Parliament body aims to improve transportation on islands

The committee also emphasized on immediate action in order to implement the development projects

A parliamentary standing committee has recommended taking action to improve transport facilities on Hatia, Sandwip and Bhola islands.

The committee made the recommendation at its fifth meeting, chaired by Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam, held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, says a press release issued on Wednesday.

The committee emphasized on the need for immediate action in order to implement the development projects to ensure easy and safe transportation of the island residents.

Addressing the ongoing projects in Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports, it recommended taking appropriate measures to complete the projects within the given timeframe. The committee also suggested the cleaning and dredging of rivers with the cooperation of the water resource ministry.

Moreover, the committee recommended building necessary lighthouses in the coastal areas immediately.

Among the committee members, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan, M Majharul Haq Prodhan, Ranjit Kumar Roy, Mahfuzur Rahman, Dr Shamil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, M Aslam Hossen Sawdagar and SM Shahjada took part in the meeting, added the press release.

Among others, Shipping Secretary, Chattogram port chairman, Mongla port chairman and officials concerned of the parliament secretariat were also present.
