Parliament goes into budget session

Session to continue till July 11

The first budget session of the 11th Parliament began on Tuesday at 5pm with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Before the House went into session, the business advisory committee of parliament sat in a meeting to fix the duration and businesses of the session, reports UNB.

It was decided in the meeting that the budget session will continue till July 11.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will place the proposed national budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year in the House at 5pm on June 13. The size of the budget is expected to cross Tk5 lakh crore (5 trillion).

The supplementary budget will be passed on June 17, after discussions on June 16. The Finance Bill will be passed on June 29, while the budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year will be passed on June 30.

Presided by Committee Chairman and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the meeting was attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Raushon Ershad, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Huq Inu, M Fazle Rabbi Miah, Anisul Huq, Anisul Islam Mahmud and Nur-E-Alam Chowdhury.

The meeting also decided that the Speaker can extend or reduce the working days of the current session, if necessary. The session will resume at 3pm every (working) day.

On May 13, President Abdul Hamid summoned the third session (Budget, 2019) of the 11th Parliament, exercising the power bestowed upon him as per Article 72 (1) of the constitution.

Last year on June 7, former finance minister AMA Muhith placed a Tk464,573-crore budget for the outgoing 2018-19 fiscal.
