The proposed law suggests establishing a Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council with its headquarters located in Dhaka

The Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council Bill, 2019, was passed in parliament on Monday, aimed at bringing all Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council activities within a legal framework.

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed presented the bill in the House, which was unanimously passed by voice vote, with Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia in the chair, reports BSS.

Piloting the bill, the minister said the enactment of the law would expedite and consolidate activities of the Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council.

"The proposed law will replace the existing resolution under which the organization is now being operated," he added.

The proposed law suggests establishing a Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council with its headquarters located in Dhaka.

It inserts provisions for an 84-member council governing body, the formation of a 19-member executive committee, and the appointment of staff to the council.

Earlier in the day, Jatiya party lawmakers, Pir Fazlur Rahman and Rowshan Ara Mannan, and Gonoforum lawmaker, Mukabbir Khan, had proposed amendments to the bill which were rejected by voice vote.
