The JaPa chairman added that no Jatiya Party lawmakers will be part of the new cabinet
Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman HM Ershad has announced that his party will serve as the main opposition in the 11th National Parliament.
He disclosed this in a press release issued on Friday.
The release read: “As the chairman of the Jatiya Party, I want to inform all leaders, activists, and supporters—and the people of Bangladesh—that JaPa will serve as the main opposition party in the 11th National Parliament.
“I [HM Ershad] will serve as the leader of the main opposition party, because of my rank as the president of JaPa. Meanwhile, Co-Chairman Golam Mohammed Quader will act as the deputy leader. No Jatiya Party lawmakers will be part of the new cabinet.”
Ershad concluded the press release by urging Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to take the necessary steps in this regard.
However—at a meeting of Jatiya Party’s parliamentary party at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday afternoon—JaPa had initially decided to join the government of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance.
JaPa Co-Chairman GM Quader had confirmed, to Dhaka Tribune, his party’s decision the same day.
