Parliament passes Sylhet Medical University Bill

Under the bill, a medical university will be set up in Sylhet, for the expansion of higher education and research on medical education

The Sylhet Medical University Bill 2018 has been passed in Parliament on Thursday.

Under the bill, a medical university will be set up in Sylhet, for the expansion of higher education and research on medical education, reports UNB.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim moved the bill on Thursday, and it was passed by voice vote in the House.

The health minister said: “The proposed medical university will be a full-fledged one, and it will be established as part of the government's plan to set up one medical university in each division, in phases.”

According to the bill, all medical and dental colleges, and nursing institutes in Sylhet division will be affiliated with Sylhet Medical University.

Earlier on July 9, the bill was placed in parliament and it was sent to the respective parliamentary standing committee for further scrutiny.
