Parliament adopts condolence motions over death of ex-minister, MPs

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the condolence motion in the House at the beginning of the 21st session of the current Parliament.

Parliament on Tuesday unanimously adopted a condolence motion expressing profound grief at the demise of AKM Maidul Islam, a Jatiya Party MP from Kurigram-3 constituency.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the condolence motion in the House at the beginning of the 21st session of the current Parliament.

Taking part in the discussion, Opposition leader Rowshan Ershad highly praised Maidul Islam saying that he was a good soul and an honest person. 

"His death is an irreparable loss to the country and the politics of Bangladesh," she said.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Nurul Islam Omar, Rowshan Ara Mannan, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Opposition Chief Whip Tajul Islam, Noor-E-Hasna Lily Chowdhury, Prof Ali Ashraf, Fakhrul Imam, Ruhul Amin Hawlader, State Minister for Rural Development & Co-operatives Division Moshiur Rahman Ranga, State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed, and Kazi Firoz Rashid took part in the discussion.

Parliament also expressed shock at the death of two former ministers, one state minister, one whip, and four former members of the Parliament.

The deceased are former ministers M Shamsul Islam and Mamdudur Rahman, former state minister ABM Shahjahan, former whip Alhaj Syed Wahidul Alam, former members of the Parliament Prof Dr Mohammad Sahab Uddin, Khandaker M Khurram, Amina Bari, and Chaman Ara Begum.

The House later adopted a condolence motion at the death of poet Belal Chowdhury, justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury, language movement veteran Prof Mustafa Nur Ul Islam, language movement veteran Chandu Mia, Bir Pratik Hamidul Huq, and organizer of Liberation War and economic adviser of Mujib Nagar Government Abul Khayer Chowdhury.

The House also expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in plane crashes in Algeria and Cuba.

Special prayers seeking eternal peace of the departed souls was offered in the House. Bazlul Huq Harun conducted the prayers.

The members of the House also stood up and observed a one-minute solemn silence to pay respect to the memories of the deceased.
