Demonstration fills hospital with foul smell, causing suffering to patients
In an unusual demonstration, some cleaners have dumped human faeces on the premises of Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) over unpaid salaries.
They splattered excrement at the hospital’s emergency department and in front of the director’s office on Thursday afternoon, filling the establishment with a foul smell.
The unique protest by the outsourced cleaners caused suffering to the patients and their families.
Later, the hospital’s permanent cleaning staff cleaned up after the demonstrators and the hospital authorities informed the police.
The hospital administration will meet with the demonstrators on Saturday to resolve the issue, KMCH Director Dr Rabiul Hasan told Dhaka Tribune.
According to insider sources, the hospital outsourced 45 cleaners from the local Harijan or Dalit community 11 months ago to deal with the added pressure of amid the Covid-19 pandemic. However, they have not received their salaries for the last five months.
