Four elephants found dead in five days

Update : 12 Nov 2021, 05:56 PM

Another Asian elephant has been found dead in Chittagong -- the fourth to die in a span of just five days.

On Friday morning, locals found the body of the animal in a paddy field in Banshkhali Upazila’s Jaldi Rage, confirmed Anisuzzaman Sheikh, an officer of Jaldi Wildlife Sanctuary Range.

No external injuries were found on the male elephant aged about 50, he said, adding that the animal would be buried after a postmortem.

According to Livestock Officer Dr Samaranjan Barua, the elephant died on Thursday night.

During the autopsy, the officials discovered that the elephant's lungs had deteriorated and was giving out a rotten odour, he said, adding that a full autopsy would reveal the cause of the death.

In the last five days, four other elephants were found dead -- three in Chittagong alone and one in Sherpur.

In Bangladesh, Asian elephants are found in greater Chittagong and Sylhet Division and Sherpur.

However, recently there has been an alarming rise in elephant deaths, often caused by man-made leaf traps or bullets when they come down from the hills in search of food.
