The man was critically injured during the clash on Monday night
A man has died from injuries he sustained during a clash between supporters of two rival union parishad (UP) chairman candidates in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna.
Sabuj Hossain, 28, reportedly a supporter of independent candidate Omar Faruk, passed away while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Tuesday night.
Faruk is vying for the post of chairman in the Vaina UP election scheduled to be held on Thursday.
Sabuj was critically injured during the clash between the supporters of Faruk and Awami League’s chairman candidate Amin Uddin on Monday night.
Several others were also injured in the clash and some motorbikes were vandalised, said Sujanagar police OC Mizanur Rahman. He also added that both sides had submitted complaints about the violence.
Of the injured, Sabuj and one Anwar Hossain, a supporter of Amin, were admitted to RMCH as their condition was critical. Sabuj died around 9pm Tuesday.
On Monday, Sabuj’s brother Anwar Hossain had filed a case with Sujanagar police, naming 15 people and 50 unknown people, over the violence and attack. The charges were updated to murder after Sabuj’s death.
As the news spread, Omar's supporters brought out a procession in Chalna village and laid a brief siege on Sujanagar police station Tuesday night, demanding a free and fair investigation into the violence and exemplary punishment to those responsible for Sabuj’s death.
Independent runner Faruk alleged that some miscreants, backed by the local administration, were committing violent acts in different unions under Sujanagar, and they were responsible for Sabuj’s death.
