Five shot, 15 injured in clash Pabna ahead of UP polls

Five men have been shot in clashes between two factions of Awami League in Pabna's Sujanagar Upazila ahead of the second phase of the UP elections slated for November 11.

At least 15 others were injured and an election campaign centre was vandalized during the clashes which took place in Barbhagia village under Hatkhali union of the upazila on Thursday night.

Four of the injured were admitted to Pabna General Hospital in critical condition.

The five persons, wounded in gunshot, are –Azhar Ali Mollah, 65, Azgar Ali Mollah, 60, Khairul Islam, 40, Rehana Khatun, 35, and Jubayer Hossain. All are residents of Barbhagia village.

Sujanagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman said it was not violence relating to the election.

Sujanagar Upazila Krishak League Organizing Secretary and independent chairman candidate Firoz Ahmed Khan has got into trouble with two fractions of groups. The incident took place over a personal relationship between the son and daughter of two families in Barbhagia village, he added.

However, Firoz Ahmed Khan said the supporters of Awami League chairman candidate had created trouble from the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers on October 26. Following that, some miscreants attacked the village and left several injured  Thursday night.

“If it was not election-centric, then why would they attack my election campaign centre,” he questioned.

Awami League candidate Abdur Rauf denied the matter, saying no such incident had taken place in Hatkhali Union.

“Sensing my popularity and confirmed victory, Firoz is running propaganda against me. He is disrupting the electoral environment resorting to electoral violence,” he added.

Currently, the situation has been brought under control. Police patrols have been intensified. Legal action will be taken if any complaint is received, said OC Mizanur Rahman.

Meanwhile, Additional Police Super of Pabna district Masud Alam visited the spot.
