A total of 70 people have been arrested so far in four cases

Ten more accused arsonists, among 70 arrested so far in the Pirganj arson attack, vandalism, violence and looting case, have been taken on two-day police remand.

Mahbub Rahman, the case investigating officer and the OC (Investigation) of Pirganj police station, had produced the 10 before a court on Thursday with a seven-day remand plea.

After hearing the plea, the judge of the Pirganj Cognizance Court, Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Fazle Elahi granted remand for two days for each of the 10 accused.

Talking to BSS, Pirganj police OC Saresh Chandra said: “The 10 new remanded people also include prime suspects and Shibir activists Abdullah Al Mamun and Omar Farooq alias Tonet."

The two Shibir activists came to Majhipara village in Pirganj from Sadullapur on a motorbike with petrol and allegedly participated in the arson attacks and violence against the Hindu community on the night of October 17.

"A total of 70 people have been arrested so far in four cases filed at Pirganj police station in connection with the provocative post on Facebook, arson attacks, looting, vandalism and violence in Majhipara village," he said.

"Of the four cases, three were files under the Digital Security Act and the other one in connection with the arson attacks, looting, assault, vandalism and robbery," he added.

Earlier, arrested prime suspects Saikat Mandal and Rabiul Islam gave confessional statements before a Rangpur court, admitting their involvement in the Pirganj violence. They are now behind the bars.

Previously, the 50 accused persons, who were put on a three-day remand in two phases in connection with the arson, vandalism and looting at Majhipara, were also sent to jail on completion of their remand.

On October 17, hundreds of miscreants attacked, vandalised and set fire to houses of the Hindu community in Majhipara village following a provocative post on Facebook from the ID of Paritosh Sarker of the same village.
