The mastermind behind the arson attack on Hindu houses in Pirganj, Rangpur and his associate have given confessional statements to a Rangpur court.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Delwar Hossain recorded their statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Sunday afternoon, confirmed court official Shahidul Islam.

The two accused are prime suspect and expelled Chhatra League leader Saikat Mandal, 24, and his associate Md Robiul Islam, 36, who is also the imam of a local mosque.

In his statement, Shahidul said, Saikat confessed that he was involved in the attack and made posts on social media to incite violence. Robiul also admitted to his involvement in the attacks.

The court sent the duo to prison later in the evening after recording their statements. None of them had sought bail.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Saikat and Robiul from Tongi, Gazipur on Friday night.

They were arrested based on information gathered from people who were detained over the Pirganj attacks.

On the night of October 17, establishments belonging to members of the Hindu community were set on fire by a mob at Boro Karimpur village in Pirganj. Around 30 locals were injured at the time.

The attack took place after communal violence spread to some 20 districts in recent weeks, triggered by allegations that the Holy Quran was desecrated at a Hindu temple during Durga Puja in Comilla.

At least seven people have been killed during attacks and clashes in Chandpur, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni and other areas since the Hindu establishments came under attack in Comilla.

Pirganj police have filed three cases — two under the Digital Security Act and one under the Penal Code — against Saikat and Robiul over the arson attack, which have left hundreds of Hindu families homeless.

Saikat ran a Facebook page in his name that had over 3,000 followers. Over 500 people had gathered ahead of the arson attack after Saikat’s post was made.
